I am so honored to be able to shine a spotlight on the amazing area where I grew up in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Please take a moment an reminisce or learn about this amazing region in my article this week for Yahoo Travel! called, “New York’s Finger Lakes, A Flashback to another era.”
Are the winters cold up there in Central NY? Absolutely! How cold are they? So cold, that the Farmers Alamanac listed Syracuse, NY as THE NUMBER ONE “Worst Winter City In The Country.” They go on to describe Syracuse’s long October through April winters as “clammy, cold and snowy.”
But before the flurries accumulate my family decided last weekend to head up to my hometown and enjoy the Finger Lakes October bliss. With its amber trees and fruitful apple orchards we celebrated what we like to call our, “Harvest Weekend.”
We checked out Lafayette’s Annual Apple Festival which is basically a sweet old fashioned non for profit Americana festival benefiting the local community and their activities. It’s was so fun to go back and see how this festival has grown since 1972, when my mother with a handful of other women spent weekends baking the most delicious apple pies in the basement of one of the churches. We stopped by my old Catholic church’s booth, St. Joesph’s where they were selling the most delicious apple fritters and apple pies. While eating our goodies we listened to the very talented, Ann Witer sing and play guitar under the gazebo.
This sunset on Cayuga lake took our breaths away. I want to encourage you all to go on up to this area and create your very own Harvest Weekends.
Thank you to Ashley who reps the the Finger Lakes Tourism board for all her help in gathering pictures for my story.
