I think Louis CK is a hysterical and a profound comedian of our time who changed the face of stand up comedy. Alan at Icetothebrim.com has a great article on this. He writes, “Louis is not only one of the best, hardest working comics in the world today, he’s also changing the rules a bit. He’s started connecting directly with his fans over the past year, promoting the show on twitter, etc. And now he’s just created his own special which he’s selling himself on his site.”
Louis has been one of my favorite comedians because he is a maestro of storytelling. He has mastered sharing his personal stories and then turning them into incredibly funny, truthful works of comedy. Last night he was the guest host on NBC’s season finale of Saturday Night Live. His set opened with an honest statement about growing up in the 70’s and his “mild” case of racism. I actually appreciated HIS truthful account of how racism was tolerated in the Archie Bunker day of the 70’s and now how it affects him as an adult. He then went on to tell a story of comparing his two daughter’s relationship to Palestine and Israel. This story made me LAUGH out loud since it’s exactly the relationship I see between my son and daughter. Louis’s next joke is where he lost me and that’s when he spoke about child molesters and compared their pleasure of sexually abusing children to him LOVING a delicious Mounds bar. I’d like to see the damage control happening over at Hershey the MOUNDS candy bar maker today, “Come on! We gotta be involved in a pedafile joke? Thanks!” as Milton Hershey rolls over in his grave.
I’ve done comedy on and off for fifteen years, and I could possibly be alienating myself from the community I love so much by criticizing one of its greats but I have to speak out as a wife, daughter, sister and mother: Rationalizing why MONSTERS molest children is NEVER funny. I would find it very hard to believe that any woman comic would tell a joke of this thoughtless magnitude. It’s an irresponsible joke that doesn’t need to be told and it makes me question Louis’s discretion, sensitivity and intentions.
The subject of child molestation told by Louis is not entertaining, laughable or appropriate. I could ALMOST see this unforgivable joke coming from a green fatherless comic who is riffing and just shooting from the hip but from an established comedian and father of two, Louis CK? Really? I’d like to see Louis CK and any other comic tell this joke to a face of a helpless child victimized and sexually abused by a sick pedafile or to an adult who’s suffering everyday with depression, PTSD and thoughts of suicide because they were a casualty of a monster that Louis just said must abuse children “…because you can only really surmise it must be really good to pedafiles.”
This male comedian insensitivity to child predators needs to be addressed. I’ve seen it before in comedy; I once watched a middle aged comic at an open mic tell a joke about raping a ten year old girl and how, “Men don’t care if they do it – they just don’t want to get caught for it.” The room full of male comics stood and said nothing while ME the only woman comic there stood up, walked out of the room and yelled at the comic on stage, “You are a sick F&*k.” Even this morning while reading my Facebook feed I was shocked to read a male comedian post, “Hey! Louis CK stole my pedafile joke last night on SNL!” Really? Well maybe that joke was best LEFT stolen.
